Washburn N4 Nuno Bettencourt Signature

Who does not know this old guitar, his band will be in Jakarta mid december orders yet to come. Before watching acting, for fans of guitar, let’s briefly design the N4.

Washburn and Nuno Bettencourt N series has indeed been renewed by removing the N5 and N6, which has a difference on the fretboard wood, finishing, pickguard and pickup switching when compared with the N4. However, as the main workhorse Nuno, N4 remains the most frequently used.

Natural
Washburn N4 identical with natural finishing dof is quite thin, with no solid color on the surface of the body and necknya wood and make it feel feel the wood. If related to the tone, in our opinion this type of finish is the most good.

In that sense, remain protected from moist wood or oil from the player’s body and a thin layer of clear film not block the resonance of the body, so that the vibration of the strings can further maximize tone.

The disadvantage, of course, in terms of aesthetics (if the paint color and felt to be more interesting), the protection is less (compared with a hard polyurethane finish) and age finish that may not last long. N4 which we test using ash wood (alder on N4 vintage) with a thick wood fiber at the edge body and maple for the neck and ebony fretboard.

Body that looks similar to Strat were smaller and shorter. We can see from the distance between the end of the tremolo bridge is quite close to the end of the body. Although it looks shorter, fixed length scale used is 25 ½ “, similar to those used on Fender.

For the typical shredder like Nuno (if it can be categorized so),  on the neckn is quite thin, about 20.15 mm in the thickness of the first fret Ibanez neck like a majority but with a more convex radius fretboard, which is 12 “. Headstock which has a reverse angle of 14 degrees to the rear and use a different piece of wood maple neck.

N4 is also equipped with the BFTS (Buzz Feiten Tuning System), which can you see the sign from the sticker on the back of the headstock. A tuning system of compensation found by the Buzz Feiten nut with a little advance towards the bridge and a different tuning process to obtain a more precise pitch notes at each fret.

Neck Joint

As we explain in the last edition, N4 using a unique neck joint. The end neck and neck pocket in the body is totally different from the commonly used joint. Cutaway body is at the top of the other guitar body wood is actually part of the neck as well as a place of bolt on to the body.

Without something that prevents finger neck joint section, N4 ensure access to upper frets are much easier and convenient. Enough about theory, so you see this guitar, or have friends who have, you can prove and try it. One question that seemed a little hesitation, ‘if the joint is strong enough? “Given the surface and cross section that is not too big and bulky to be a connection and apparently seen no balance, only strengthened in the low strings.

Of course strong, our own responsibility. N4 is a guitar that has been through nearly two decades of productive life, if indeed a problem would have been stopped or replaced at the joint system. To strengthen the theory, we try to attract and encourage the neck to see if there is a shift in the position of the body, and indeed why the connections are strong. On guitar we have this review, we do not dare to remove the neck from the body.

Duncan & Lawrence

As media catcher string vibration installed Seymour Duncan 59 in neck and Bill Lawrence L500 in the bridge. Our attention is more focused on the bridge humbucker, neck pickup does not mean no need to explain, but some of us may already know that 59 is a series of Duncan humbucker more Les Paul PAF character, warm and sweet.

Shaped like a humbucker without cover with polepiece standard. While Lawrence L500 using polepiece strips of iron, known as blade or rail polepiece which has the advantage of a balanced output when bending strings.

L500 is also often associated with Dimebag Darrel who was using it before moving on to the signature pickup output Dimebucker Duncan. Washburn seems not consistent in using the Bill Lawrence pickups (see box). On some early production, Washburn using products from Bill Lawrence, but recently chose to use the product from the Bill Lawrence USA to cut production costs.

Our review guitar uses pickups from Bill Lawrence USA, which can be known from a thinner blade. Both neck and bridge pickups are connected to a 3 way Gibson style toggle located on the lower horn. Simple electronic switching and control, using only one master volume with no tone control.

Sound

Using our favorite amps from Tech21 TM60, we N4 connects directly to the channel distortion. Mix of vintage and modern character of both pickups is perfect, at least we’ve heard of this guitar.

But despite having DCR 12Kohm on bridge pickup that is usually hot enough to bridge position, we feel the characters spent too shrill and a little less power. If we are to have this guitar, we’ll replace it with Dimebucker Duncan or Bill Lawrence XL500 Bill & Becky’s output.

Washburn N4 ESA made in USA custom shop. The price is priced not cheap, but if you are a big fan of Nuno or looking for high end guitars are simple and expressive, and not a product of hip today, is More Than words to describe the benefits of this guitar legend.
